Inspired by a true passion for country lifestyle, John Nichols began a lifelong project to create the pinnacle of country and outdoor clothing with the support of his family. Since 1954, the spirit of every distinctive design has been in Quality, Reliability & Style. Now into its 3rd generation much has changed, but our families’ love for country sports and outdoor pursuits still remains as strong as ever, so does our mission to deliver excellence in both form and function.
After 47 successful years, the family refreshed the brand with the intention of broadening the collection and making it accessible to all. This allowed our customers in both town and country to enjoy British country classics that would stand the test of time. Named after our roots in the heart of Yorkshire, Rydale Clothing was born.
After prolific success within the Yorkshire region it was time to journey beyond the borders and spread the Rydale word far and wide, touring country shows across the whole of Great Britain.
Keeping durability and quality foremost, we developed our collection aiming to make it as complete as possible. Taking Rydale on tour gave us the valuable opportunity to receive feedback directly from showground’s across the UK. We listened carefully to the response of our customers and the design team honed in on what mattered most to you.
You asked for More country work shirts
We released “The range of Richmond shirts; hard wearing, 100% cotton, country check shirts in different designs”
You suggested "Wellies that are warm not just waterproof"
You asked for stylish tweed for ladies
We brought together Fine Italian tweeds and renowned British designers to create "The Lucinda, a ladies tweed outfit stylish in any occasion”
We had access to the Yorkshire Moors right on our doorstep, the ideal place to test out and refine our latest designs. Through streams and becks, over stiles across moorland all of our products must perform. After a hard day we will stop off at the village pub to debate over which of our favourite local places each new jacket or jumper should be named after and why.
The hard work was affirmed by following show seasons which saw Rydale grow and develop. To this day there’s been too many highlights to pick a clear favourite, however one of our biggest supporters, Ken, never failed to visit us each and every year at The Great Yorkshire Show. He would stroll on to the stand with his generous gift of fresh game pie with a big smile. Needless to say he’s one of the few who have made it into our esteemed Rydale hall of fame.
Being Yorkshire born and bred we are passionate supporters of British Manufacture, British Farming and yes, British bacon. Our extensive range of ladies waxed jackets, men’s Tweed coats, body warmers, outdoor country clothing and flat caps are all being made right here in the North of England. We have been supporting British manufacturers since the beginning and we are not going to stop.
Keeping up with our loyal patriots is one of our most rewarding challenges. It is very fulfilling to know that our clothing is the first choice for those rural families who rush to pick up arm-fulls of shirts, jumpers, and jackets every season. This makes us even more driven and motivated to reinvent traditional designs and continue to expand our range of timeless classics, so each year there’s something to look forward to.
Our journey so far has had its share of highs and lows, still firmly based in Yorkshire the success of Rydale would not have been without our dedicated and loyal team. From Rachel the flash Ashton, Head of Design (23 years’ service), Debbie Bath Head of ‘Math’……what would we do without her (25 years’ service) to Mark Johnson aka BIG JOHNO, show coordinator (17 years’ service). However everybody in the team would be lost without Ollie and Teddy wagging their tails around the office looking for a sneaky treat or jumping up for a cuddle.
Today you can find Rydale in more places than ever. With numerous stockists spread across the North of England, the most being in ‘Gods own county’. As well as our authorised stockists we continue to attend countless Horse Trails, Game Fairs and County Shows across the whole of Great Britain. We look forward to seeing you this year. Here’s our calendar.
Going forward, the Nichols family believes Rydale clothing and the countryside go hand in hand and feel a strong duty to protect and reclaim the British countryside for future generations to enjoy. Over the last 5 years we have invested heavily in waste management and recycling. As of May 2012 we are proud to say we have 0.5% contribution to landfill by recycling virtually all company waste. To offset our small carbon footprint we have created large areas of woodland by planting over 10000 trees and counting. We’ve also become known for our reusable bags for life and many customers look forward to collecting each season’s new designs to use all year round.
